Open System

A colon irrigation is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of accumulated fecal matter, gas and mucus. Unlike an enema, it does not involve the retention of water, therefore is less uncomfortable and more thorough. The average enema only reaches the first 6-12 inches of the colon, whereas a colon irrigation can reach the entire 5-6 foot length of the large intestine.

There is no discomfort, no internal pressure, just a steady flow of water in and out of the colon. The therapist gently massages the abdomen to help the colon release its contents. All sessions are tailored to the individual. We focus more on how much water is used during your treatment, rather than the time. The average session on the open system is around 45 minutes, but some clients usually request more time.

Why you may choose the open system over the closed system:

  • Open system may provide a better release for those who have chronic fecal impaction because there is nothing to contain their release. If you have severe constipation, this may be the better choice, as we have seen baseball sized boluses released using this system.
  • Client has complete control.
  • There is more privacy for the client.
  • The technician frequents the room and serves as a coach, there is a bell to ring if you need assistance. Otherwise, we check on you every 10-15 minutes to gauge your progress and to administer abdominal work.
  • The disposable rectal nozzles are much smaller than a typical speculum (the diameter of a pencil).
  • The client is able to eat/drink right up to their appointment time because they are able to release their bladder during their session.
